William Cartwright (1611-1643) was an English playwright and poet. While most of his works have received little attention or critical acclaim, his 1651 Works is of great interest due to the significant number of commendatory poems prefixed to this volume. Cartwright was a staunch Royalist, even to the point of his death in 1643 defending the University of Oxford when civil war came to the town of Oxford in 1642.
